As chillier temperatures and falling leaves surround us, we are reminded that winter is coming. Fall is the perfect time to do some seasonal maintenance to keep your household running smoothly and comfortably throughout the winter. A bit of planning now will ensure that you won’t be caught off guard with costly repairs and aggravation.
EXTERIOR MAINTENANCE
- Inspect your chimney. If you have a wood-burning fireplace and use it often, be sure to have it inspected and cleaned by a professional. Make sure to also order enough firewood for the season,
- Check your roof. You should be able to inspect your roof from the ground visually, but if possible, climb up a ladder for a better view. Look for missing, damaged, or loose shingles. Make repairs as needed.
- Tidy your gutters. Hire a service to clear summer and fall debris from your gutters, or do it yourself. Be sure to check for leaks once the waste is removed.
- Test water drainage. Rainwater downspouts need to direct the water away from foundations, sidewalks, and driveways. Add extensions if necessary.
- Care for your landscaping. Cut back bushes, shrubs, and flowers as needed and remove fallen leaves. Also, consider fertilizing and planting bulbs for spring. Bring in your flowerpots and inspect trees for damaged limbs close to your home or power lines.
INTERIOR MAINTENANCE
- Test your home safety devices. Replace the batteries in all smoke and carbon monoxide warning systems and test to ensure all are working correctly.
- Look for drafts. Carefully feel for drafts around doors and windows. If necessary, replace seals and repair caulking around door and window frames.
- Have your furnace inspected. Hire a professional to test for leaks and system efficiency and change the filter. They can also do a carbon monoxide check to ensure air safety.
ADDITIONAL MAINTENANCE
- Winterize summer power equipment. Make sure to empty the fuel from any gas-powered lawn equipment. Sharpen lawnmower blades and change the oil to prepare for spring.
- Get winter equipment ready. Service your snowblower and make sure that it still runs well. If you have a generator, be sure to test it. If your equipment requires gasoline, make sure to purchase new gas for the winter.
- Hang your lights. If you plan to put up holiday lights this season, consider hanging them early before the cold weather sets in.
